Masked Singer's Mahalia Barnes on Osher's sneaky guessing tactic

Mahalia Barnes was revealed as Pavlova on The Masked Singer on Tuesday night after wowing the judges with her version of Andra Day's Rise Up.

In an interview with New Idea, Mahalia said she found the whole experience hilarious and hadn't laughed that hard in some time.

"The last (song) that I did, Rise Up, I laughed so much when I stepped out onto that stage and there was a giant whisk and a huge carton of eggs and I’m a pavlova singing ‘rise up’, because of course I am, that’s what a pavlova does," she said.

She also revealed to the magazine that the only person who knew the 39-year-old was performing on the show was her father, Jimmy Barnes, but thankfully the pair didn't have to come up with too many wild stories to hide her whereabouts.

The singer said she was able to dodge people by saying she was working or recording, and no one asked many questions.

However, once the show began airing, she received numerous messages from friends and family who immediately recognised her voice.

"My husband and my eldest daughter (Ruby) knew the second they saw me perform a first note," she said. "They were looking at me like, 'Really, you’re going to try and tell us that’s not you?' My littlest one, (Rosetta), who’s five, she also recognised my voice and kept saying throughout the episodes, 'That Pavlova sounds like my mum’, but she was a bit confused because obviously she said 'My mum’s here'."

Mahalia joked that she got "pretty good at ghosting people" when they'd ask if it was her.

The singer added that she now has her suspicions about who is left in the competition, saying she recognises a few of them.

And it turns out, host Osher Gunsberg has his own sneaky way of guessing who the celebrities are under the masks.

"I think he probably makes some good informed guesses for himself," she said of Osher. "It sounds like he seems to recognise a lot of people. He has a different connection than the judges do because they’re quite far away, he’s right there so maybe he picks up on some things. Someone even said to me, 'He recognises people’s perfumes' and things like that."
