Mark Hamill might be best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, but his three children, Nathan, Griffin and Chelsea, know him best simply as Dad.

Mark married his wife Marilou York in 1978, and the following year the couple welcomed son Nathan. A second son, Griffin, followed in 1983, before they had a daughter, Chelsea, in 1988.

In a 2023 interview with Esquire, the actor discussed his relationship with his own father, telling the publication, “He was a career naval officer, very authoritarian. I was the middle of seven kids. He just could not understand why I love puppets and monster movies and comic books. These were all frivolous things that I should outgrow.”

However, his own children have inherited his passion for movies, comics and the visual arts — though they do have their differences. He told Esquire about parenting, “You have to stay in the moment and stay involved. You just can't assume that things are going to go the way you expected. All three of my kids are different from one another."

Nathan works on comic strips and is in a band, while Griffin is a visual artist. Chelsea, meanwhile, works as her father’s assistant. They’re all close, too, often appearing at events together and posting family snaps on social media.

So, from their Star Wars cameos to the careers they found in adulthood, here’s everything to know about Mark Hamill’s three kids.

Nathan Elias was born on June 25, 1979, during the production of Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Empire Strikes Back. (He later had a cameo in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.)

Growing up, he was raised on “a healthy diet of cartoons, comics, movies and toys,” according to his website. In an interview from the 1990s, Mark joked that Nathan’s first word was “Kenner”, due to the number of Kenner Star Wars action figures in their home.

Nathan was a big fan of Ghostbusters as a child, and he once shared a series of drawings he created based on the movie on Instagram.

He got to visit the set of Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi as a toddler, and the Star Wars website shared a series of photos of him there with Mark and Marilou in 2015, provided by his mother.

Nathan is an artist, and has worked with Matt Groening at Bongo Comics to create a range of characters. According to his website, he has “an affinity for large-eyed creatures, ranging from cute to macabre, bashful to bellicose.” He creates the 2 Dumb Dinos comic strip with Eric Filipkowski, and has worked with Disney on "How Not to Draw" tutorials.

He’s a musician too, as part of the band Vacuum. In October 2023, Nathan shared photos of his band’s first vinyl record on X (formerly Twitter), and Mark quoted his post with the caption, “You better save one for me!”

Nathan has a daughter, Autumn, who was born on Oct. 31, 2016, with his former partner Maegan Chen. Though she is largely kept out of the public eye, Mark did post a photo of himself with his granddaughter to celebrate Easter in 2024.

Griffin Tobias was born on March 4, 1983. He’s a visual artist and also works as an operations manager and instructor at MuDo Integrated Martial Art in Santa Monica, Calif., where he is a student, too.

Griffin often appears in public with his father. In 2003, he was there with Mark for rehearsals of the play Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks in New York City, and he made an appearance in Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi as Salaka Kuchimba in 2017.

For his birthday in 2019, Mark posted on X to pay tribute to his son, saying, “Wishing the happiest of birthdays to Salaka Kuchimba (aka Griffin Hamill). Martial Arts Instructor, gifted painter, animal-lover, loving son and a true friend whose unconditional support means the world to me. Have a great one! [love], Dad.”

Chelsea Elizabeth was born on July 27, 1988. A photo of Chelsea appeared in the 1990 TV series The Flash, depicting an infant Axel Walker.

According to ABC News, she works as her father’s assistant and will sometimes accompany him to public events, like the European premiere of The Last Jedi at Royal Albert Hall, London, in December 2017.

Chelsea said of attending the premieres with her father, “It’s fun to be together like this. As you get older, you start treasuring the times you get to spend with family.”

At the time, the family was mourning the loss of their family friend, Carrie Fisher, who died in December 2016.

Chelsea said then that she and her family were grateful that Star Wars brought them back together after so long between movies. “I think it was nice to have a chance to reconnect and these films really brought that back," she said, per ABC News.

Chelsea is also a dog lover and often posts photos of her dogs on Instagram. She marked National Pet Day in April with a photo of her two dogs playing, writing in her caption, “I thought #NationalPetDay was every day.”
