Taylor Swift has spoken out about the importance of Emma Watson's recent speech on gender equality.

The singer, who admits she only recently became a feminist, says Watson's celebrity will undoubtedly drive an important conversation for young girls.

"I wish when I was 12-years-old I had been able to watch a video of my favorite actress explaining in such an intellectual, beautiful, poignant way the definition of feminism," said Swift. "Because I would have understood it. And then earlier on in my life I would have proudly claimed I was a feminist because I would have understood what the word means."

As a teenager, Swift says she had no idea what the concept of feminism was, referring to an interview in 2012 when she said, "I don't really think about things as guys versus girls. I never have. I was raised by parents who brought me up to think if you work as hard as guys, you can go far in life."

It seems Swift has since changed her tune, thanks in part to her good friend Lena Dunham.

"Becoming friends with Lena - without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for - has made me realize that I've been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so," said Swift.
