A number of celebrities including Russell Crowe and Simon Pegg have thrown their support behind Emma Watson's #HeForShe campaign.

The actress was heralded with kickstarting the movement, which implores men to join the fight for gender equality, after giving an amazing speech on what it means to be a feminist.

"Why has the word become such an unpopular one? I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts," said Watson. "I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men."

The Harry Potter actress then asked men around the world to join women in the fight for gender equality.

"I am reaching out to you because we need your help," Watson said. "We must try to mobilise as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change. We don't just want to talk about it. We want to try and make sure it's tangible."

Almost 100,000 men have already signed up to the #HeForShe movement, with thousands sharing pictures of themselves holding signs with the hashtag.

"Husband to a wife, father to a daughter, son to a mother. You bet I'm on board, @EmWatson! #heforshe," tweeted Simon Pegg.

Sadly, Watson has also been the target of a series of online threats in response to her campaign.

"A website has been set up with the title 'Emma You Are Next', along with the words, 'never forget, the biggest to come thus far', said Gawker.

While the basis of the threats is unclear, a clock counting down to three days from now indicates the actress may be the target of an imminent online attack.

It's suspected hackers may be planning to reveal photos from Watson's phone following her speech, which only serves to further highlight the need for such a campaign.
