Sarah Silverman might be one of the best-known comics in Hollywood but the 44-year-old has revealed that as an up-and-coming performer she earned less than her male counterparts. In a video made ahead of Equal Pay Day on April 14, Silverman talks about finding out she was being paid $10 for a 15-minute set while a male friend was being paid $60.

“We did the exact same time back-to-back on the same show,” she said. “It’s pretty shitty."

Silverman also talked about the “violent hate Tweets” she receives if she ever posts about women’s rights on social media, saying it was “so odd. It’s just bizarre.

“[Talking about gender equality] creates such a rage in certain people and of course that comes from fear."

In the moving and personal video, the performer also argued that she thinks women more broadly need to develop a strong sense of self worth.

“My therapist says, and I think about it all the time, 'We don’t get what we want, we get what we think we deserve,’” says Silverman. "We deserve quality lives with equality and maybe control over our own human bodies without the government getting involved. To do whatever we get great at and do. And it has to come from inside and understanding you deserve it.”
