How Well Are Women Really Treated In Australia?

To mark International Women's Day, we carried out a new poll that found that 80 per cent of Australian women believe that men and women are not treated equally in this country.

We also found that nearly half of women underestimated the gender pay gap, which is 17.1 per cent. Meanwhile, only one in five women would describe themselves as a feminist – with nearly 75 per cent saying they “believe in equality” but feel the word feminist is “too strong”.

Our campaign began on Wednesday when we sent five "ambassadors" out on to the streets of Sydney wearing placards highlighting the gender pay gap between men and women. The placards carried slogans such as “Hi Ladies, I earn 17.1 per cent more than you” and “Ladies, you’re working for free today from 3.45pm”.

In Australia, the average woman who works full-time earns 17.1 per cent less than the average man. And even though 56 per cent of university graduates are women, just six per cent of Australia's top 200 companies have female CEOS.

We've also launched a video highlighting discrimination in Australia – and calling for women to demand better.
