File this under: future binge-watching classic. Oscar nominee and filmmaker Baz Luhrmann will create a TV series for online streaming platform Netflix.

The 13-episode drama, set in 1970s New York, will focus on the burgeoning hip hop scene, and will be an all-singing (or should that be all-rapping), all-dancing extravaganza. Luhrmann’s wife and longtime collaborator, Catherine Martin (Australia’s most decorated Oscar winner, with four little gold men to her name) will serve as production and costume designer.

The series will be called The Get Down, and will air on Netflix in 2016. It will be set in South Bronx and will follow a crew of down-and-out youngsters whose daring new sound changed the face of American music forever.

This will be Luhrmann’s first project for television, and his first musical since Moulin Rouge (not counting his bedazzled staging of Strictly Ballroom: The Musical in Australia last year).

“In this golden era of TV, the Netflix culture puts no constraint on creative possibilities,” Luhrmann said in a statement. “So it is a natural home for The Get Down, a project I have been contemplating and working on now for over 10 years.”

Netflix will launch in Australia in March.
