There were mixed opinions when Rihanna stepped out in a dress featuring glitter pasties dress at the amfAR Gala in LA.

While some said the look was too risque, others, like designer Tom Ford, praised the star for her fashion-forward style.

In an open newsletter to fans, Ford referred to Rihanna's pasties (nipple covers) as "contemporary fashion" and added that he was also blown away by the nude dress worn by the singer at the CFDA Awards.

"I was at the CFDA awards as I was receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award... and I have to say that Rihanna was for me, that night, one of the most beautiful women that I have ever beheld," wrote Ford.

"I had designed several things for her specifically for that evening which she did not wear, but when I saw her it did not matter. I whispered into her ear that she was right not to have worn one of my dresses that night because she looked more beautiful than I have ever seen her look. She was stunning."

Rihanna's stylist, Mel Ottenberg, admitted it took some convincing for him to allow the singer to wear the dress.

"It's so naked," Ottenberg said. "I don't know if it's shocking - I'm with her all the time, so my shock gauge is off, but I told her that I thought she was ready for this dress a while ago, and that I wasn't. I'm the prude, and I'm just catching up."

At the time, CFDA CEO Steven Kolb described Rihanna as fashion's most exciting ambassador in recent memory.

The 26-year-old, who is the current star of Balmain's spring 2014 campaign, was presented with the Fashion Icon Of The Year Award on June 2 at Lincoln Center in New York City.
