Rihanna has elicited plenty of attention over the years for her controversial style, but it seems to have paid off, with the CFDA today announcing she will be crowned ‘Fashion Icon Of The Year’.

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said in a statement this morning: “We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory.”

Rihanna is known for taking risks on the red carpet, but she’s carefully cultivated her style persona of late.

Her edgy high-fashion look can be attributed to stylist Mel Ottenberg and costume designer Adam Selman, who have provided the singer with a unique look fusing high fashion and street wear.

The 26-year-old, who is the current star of Balmain’s spring 2014 campaign, will be presented with the Fashion Icon Of The Year Award on June 2 at Lincoln Center in New York City.

The singer is in good company, with past recipients of the award including Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Iman.
