We've spotted Rihanna in some pretty risque outfits over the years, but the latest has us scratching our heads.

The singer stepped out overnight in New York looking like she was heading home to bed - but actually, her night was just beginning.

Wearing a denim jacket over the top of her black bandeau, Rihanna surprisingly opted to finish her look with men's boxer shorts and high heels.

Naturally, the internet is divided over the ensemble, but we think if anyone could spark the 'pyjamas on a night out' trend, it would be Rihanna - after all, she wasn't named Fashion Icon Of The Year recently by the CFDA for nothing.

"We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion's most exciting ambassador in recent memory," CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said at the time.

Rihanna is known for taking risks on the red carpet, but she's carefully cultivated her style persona of late.

Her edgy high-fashion look can be attributed to stylist Mel Ottenberg and costume designer Adam Selman, who have provided the singer with a unique look fusing high fashion and street wear.

Rihanna most recently shocked fans by appearing in a nearly nude dress at the CFDA Awards.

Ottenberg told style.com that Rihanna was "ready for the dress" a while ago, but that he'd had to play catch up.
"It's so naked," Ottenberg said. "I don't know if it's shocking - I'm with her all the time, so my shock gauge is off, but I told her that I thought she was ready for this dress a while ago, and that I wasn't. I'm the prude, and I'm just catching up."

Ottenberg said that at least eight people "worked nonstop from eight P.M. [Sunday] night to three P.M. [Monday] putting the finishing touches" on the dress, which featured more than 230,000 Swarovski crystals.

According to designer Adam Selman, the dress was a collaborative effort, with Rihanna opting for the additional do-rag.

"It brings such a Rihanna feel to the whole thing. It seals the deal," said Seleman at the time.
