The “For All Mankind” spinoff has found its first cast member. Variety has learned that Rhys Ifans has been cast in the upcoming Apple TV+ drama series, which is titled “Star City.”

The official description for the show describes it as “a propulsive, paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race – when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.”

Ifans will star as the Chief Designer, who is described as “the driving force behind the Soviet Space program.”

Ifans currently stars in the hit HBO series “House of the Dragon” in the role of Otto Hightower. That show is currently prepping its third season. He won the BAFTA TV Award for best actor in 2005 for his role in the TV movie “Not Only But Always.” He was previously nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for his role in the iconic rom-rom “Notting Hill.” Ifans’ other TV roles include shows like “Temple,” “Berlin Station,” and “Elementary.” He has also starred in films such as “Anonymous,” “Snowden,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” and “Inheritance.”

He is repped by Gersh, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and 42 Management & Productions.

“Star City” hails from “For All Mankind” creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi. Wolpert and Nedivi serve as showrunners and executive producers. Moore executive produces under his Tall Ship Productions banner along with Maril Davis. Steve Oster and Andrew Chambliss are also executive producers. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.
