One Redditor sparked a debate online after saying he forgot his mom's birthday, and instead of saying something to her about it in the moment, he accidentally ended up sending her a cat video days later — which did not go over well.

On the popular Reddit page r/TIFU (short for Today I F---ed Up), a Redditor, who described himself as a 20-year-old man, wrote that the situation began when he "entirely forgot" to wish his mom a happy birthday.

"I felt kind of bad, but we don’t have the greatest relationship and she’s forgotten my birthday plenty so I planned to just wait until she forgot and moved on," he wrote.

Days later, it was his cat's birthday. Though the Redditor didn't do "anything big," he mentioned that he gave the cat some treats, cuddles and "refilled her favorite catnip toy with fresh nip, then also sprayed it down with catnip spray."

The man said he recorded a video of the cat playing with her toys and sent it around to friends — while also accidentally sending it to his parents.

"My mom responded super dismissively and is texting me that she’s disappointed in care more about a cat than her," the Redditor wrote. "So yeah, TIFU by sending my mom a video of my cat."

Fellow Reddit users commented on the incident with mixed reactions.

"I cannot stop laughing. This is hilarious," one person said, joking that the Redditor should "follow up with some Sears style family pictures of you and the cat. Maybe on Mother's Day a picture of you and cat out to brunch."

However, another commenter said that if his mom really had forgotten the Redditor's birthday "multiple times too," then what happened was more or less "fair."

"Honestly just the fact that as your mother she has forgotten your birthday and if you [don't] have a super close relationship then I wouldn't feel too bad," another agreed.

Meanwhile, somebody else in the comments section shared a hopeful message to the poster. "Sometimes things just don’t go as planned," the comment read. "I get that family relationships can be tricky. Hopefully, you can patch things up with your mom soon."

Another Redditor shared they had a similar experience. "One time I forgot my mum's birthday but showed her art I made for a celebrity's birthday like two weeks later," the commenter wrote, adding: "Yikes."

Overall, the Reddit community was sympathetic to the mishap and hoped that everyone would be able to look past the incident.

Wrote another commenter, "You did definitely FU, but fortunately, it is a tiny FU where if you are both reasonable and you personally handle this sensitively and with care, it can be a subject for teasing and joking in the future."
