MAFS' Tamara Joy hits back after being trolled for 'unrecognisable' snap

'Your opinion of me is irrelevant!'

Married At First Sight’s Tamara Joy has responded to critics on social media who said she looks “unrecognisable” in her recent Instagram post.

The reality star and OnlyFans creator, who appeared as an intruder on season six in 2019, shared a selfie on Sunday wearing a low-cut red top and pouting at the camera.

Her post was quickly flooded with negative comments from followers who said she was “stunning” and had “so much class” before getting work done to her face.

“Aw you were so natural and beautiful back on MAFS, I hope you did it all for yourself and not for the gram,” one person wrote, while another added, “This is really sad but as long as you're happy it's not for any of us to say is it”.

“You were so beautiful before darling. Why oh why did you need to improve on perfection?” A third replied.

Tamara, who has since turned comments off on her post, tells Yahoo Lifestyle she doesn’t understand why so many people are bothered by her appearance.

“These people need to take a look in their own backyard before criticising others,” she says. “It’s a shame that in 2024, we are still commenting on women’s appearance. It’s sad that society hasn’t evolved, especially women commenting on another woman’s appearance. Where is your empathy?

“Your opinion of me is irrelevant! I loved myself before, and I love myself now!”

What work has Tamara had done?

When asked about what cosmetic procedures she’s had done over the years, Tamara explains that she’s had breast enlargement, a nose job and fillers.

“I’ve had a few corrective boob jobs due to complications with the first one I had when I was younger,” she adds.

“I, personally, wanted to balance out my hips and boobs. I honestly wanted boobs and a nose job since I was 15 years old, so as soon as I was old enough, I got my first boob job!”

She also shares that in the five years since appearing on MAFS, she’s never felt any pressure from the public to change her appearance.

“I have done what I have done for myself because I wanted to, end of!” she asserts.

Expert weighs in on cosmetic surgery trend

While Tamara stresses she never felt pressure to alter her looks post-reality TV, the same can't be said for the viewers of unscripted television who are increasingly influenced by reality stars to change their appearance.

Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle about cosmetic treatments, Dr Amy Chahal, the founder of The Centre of Medical Aesthetics Sydney, shares that the rise of social media and the popularity of reality TV shows has “significantly influenced beauty standards and perceptions”.

“Some patients come in with reference images of influencers, reality TV personalities, or celebrities, seeking to emulate aspects of their appearance,” she says.

“However, as a medical professional committed to ethics and patient wellbeing, I approach these requests with a focus on individuality and safety. It's crucial to have in-depth consultations with clients to understand their motivations and to set realistic expectations. The goal is always to ensure that patients feel better about themselves, not just to conform to a popular trend or image.”

Dr Chahal adds that her general advice for patients before undergoing significant cosmetic procedures is to have realistic expectations and understand the potential risks and recovery time.

“Aftercare and downtime are often things that people do not consider enough when deciding to undergo invasive procedures,” she details.

“Patients should ensure they are in good health, both physically and mentally, and choose a qualified, experienced practitioner. Their motivation should be self-driven, not influenced by external pressures. Additionally, they should be aware of the financial implications and the long-term effects of the procedure.

“Ultimately, an informed decision, made in consultation with a qualified professional, is vital for a safe outcome that provides lasting satisfaction.”
