The country's biggest 'social experiment' is looking for its next victims, I mean participants.

Each year a new group of hopeful singles agree to participate in Married At First Sight Australia - and each year, millions of Aussie viewers tune in and ponder the same question: Why would anyone put themselves through this?

Sure, there are the usual theories about growing Instagram followers and finding '15 minutes of fame' and some of the participants over the years have even almost managed to convince us they were there to truly find their soulmate.

But as the seasons continue and we see couples more mismatched than a pair of Crocs with a ballgown, we really have to wonder why people are still willing to subject themselves to what basically amounts to psychological warfare.

This is particularly evident in the comments section of the announcement that Channel Nine has officially opened applications for next year's show, with one person writing that they would rather 'put a campfire out with their face.'

Whilst this does indeed sound rather painful, one must wonder if it might feel like a tropical vacation compared to, say, being matched with a man who tells his mates they can sleep with his wife or a woman who stops mid-sentence during dinner to receive a 'psychic download.'

"Do I need to have lost a family member recently and had my ex cheat on me?" wondered another commenter in a not-so-thinly-veiled dig at the show's propensity for choosing brides and grooms who have more past trauma than someone who once cut their own bangs.

Another person wondered, "What's the point in applying when you just hire actors?" while another still pleaded: "Get some real people on it."

One social media user had a simple request in response to the casting call: "Please don't make another season."
