Madonna's transformation over the years as she stars in new music video

There is no denying Madonna is a living legend who has for years made breakthroughs for women in music.

The Queen of Pop has had a chart-topping career for nearly 40 years and starred in award-winning films Evita, A League of Their Own, Dick Tracey and 80s hit Desperately Seeking Susan.

She sings, acts, writes her own songs and produces her look and sound, constantly reinventing herself for a new audience and era.

Recent Instagram pictures of Madonna, aged 63, in black sleevless parka, knitted hat, in black hotpants and fishnet stockings with sunglasses and with long blonde hair and crucifix chains.

She is known to push boundaries, but as she shared the new 'Frozen' Remix music video on Thursday in which she dances alongside collaborator Fireboy DML, fans are continuing to question her social media image.

At 63, Madonna has remained youthful and curated her look to keep it up-to-date and relevant - not easy in an industry that often values youth and beauty over talent.

But she is copping backlash over her smooth visage, with commentators, celebs and fans suggesting she has gone too far with digital touch-ups.

"You’re an icon... you don’t need the excessive photoshop retouching... said with love," one wrote on a Madonna post.

"She looks like a teenager. So over photoshopped and why? Then they accept compliments when people say 'beautiful'. Lol I hate when women do this. Such a bad message," another added.

Others were more blunt. While she has never admitted to having work done on her face, it has been reported that she has had collagen implants, Botox and facial peels.

"Photo retouching? I'm thinking a TON of cosmetic surgery. Full face lift, eye lift, lip enhancements. She hasn't looked this young since she was, like 15," one fan suggested.

"Girl what are you doing? I use to idolise you growing up. You don't look like that and what's with that weird ass. Please stop and just grow old gracefully please. You're Madonna, not some wannabe," one fan said on another post.

After her latest music video was released, a handful of fans simply commented with alien emojis, while one person bluntly wrote: "Looks like an alien. yuck."

Another fan asked the star to “stopppppp” changing her appearance, but another person chimed in: “Who is her surgeon !! She looks so amazing!!!!!”

Shockingly, it wasn't just Instagram fans who had their say, with fellow musicians also taking to the platform to criticise her.

“Some things should be covered up,” rapper Nelly commented on one of the more risque posts.

“Yo this is the funniest s — t LOL,” Rapper 50 Cent wrote on his Instagram story.

“That’s Madonna under the bed trying to do like a virgin at 63. She shot out, if she don’t get her old ass up.”

But Madge, no shrinking violet, was quick to clap back.

“Now you have decided to talk smack about me," she wrote.

"I guess your new career is getting attention by trying to humiliate others on social media.

"The least elevated choice you could make as an artist and an adult."

Madonna has faced criticism and shaming most of her career, whether for her looks, her sexuality or her age.

"Giving thanks that I have managed to maintain my sanity through four decades of censorship... sexism... ageism and misogyny," she wrote on one Instagram post.

After winning Woman of the Year at the 2016 Billboard Women in Music Awards, Madonna said she was vilified for aging.

“And finally, do not age,” she said in her speech.

“Because to age is a sin.

"You will be criticised, you will be vilified, and you will definitely not be played on the radio.”

"People say I’m controversial," she said.

"I think the most controversial thing I have ever done is to stick around."

And with a career longer and more successful than most of her detractors, Madonna is sure to stick around for many years yet!
