Maccas fans agree this one item needs to make a comeback: 'Was the best thing they sold'

We've waited long enough.

There are some things in life that, no matter how much time has passed, you just can't get out of your mind. Sure, new and 'improved' items may take their place and, sure, you can like them just fine, but they'll never quite be the same, will they?

For us Maccas fans, we've copped a few hits over the years. We've had to say goodbye to (my personal favourite) curry sauce and the veggie burger (although you could question how much of a loss that truly was.) We've also had to cope with the realisation that McHappy Meal toys were just better back in the good ol' days and that today's counterparts kinda miss the mark.

But there is nothing we miss more - and I mean nothing - than a Maccas Big Breakfast. The morning meal, which was served in a very eco-UN-friendly styrofoam takeaway container, consisted of scrambled eggs, a sausage patty, an English muffin and a hash brown and, you know what? It was heaven.

Some may say it was just a deconstructed Egg McMuffin but we know in our hearts they are wrong. Credit: Facebook

There's a good reason there are hundreds of online comments pleading for the fast food chain to bring this beloved brekkie back.

"I miss cutting the sausage patty and going straight through the polystyrene," one fan laughed in a Facebook group. "Should never have stopped doing these!!!"

"100% was my favourite," someone replied.

"The Maccas big breakfast used to be my favourite take away food back in the 90s, I was spewing when they removed it from the menu," wrote another member.

"This was an elite breakfast," another fan agreed while someone else said, "Was the best thing they sold."

Other fast food enthusiasts took the opportunity to suggest that the Big Breakfast was served "back when Maccas was good" while others noted that it was "Value for money back in the day. Not so much now."

"I used to buy this breakfast meal in the 1980s&1990s..real value for money, so much bigger..I really miss those years when a dollar could buy so much, it's all gone now..there was just something about the food and drinks of that time frame," someone else lamented.

In a different Facebook group, one member suggested starting a petition to bring the beloved Big Breakfast back and it got people feeling nostalgic for other Maccas menu items of yore.

"Yes please they were great and bring back the McFeast burger as well," someone politely asked.

"I want the original pancakes back. They were so much better than the ones they have now," another added.

"Bring back the MCOZ!!!," a third begged.

There were also plenty of comments from people who didn't see what all the fuss was about, with many sharing the opinion that "The big breakfast was just a deconstructed sausage and Egg McMuffin with the egg cooked differently." You can't really argue with that now, can you!

Elsewhere, people pointed out that the packaging was not great and that while the meal might be due a comeback, the material it was served in definitely should stay a thing of the past.

"That way you can eat more Styrofoam," one person quipped.

"This is why we are full of microplastics," said another. "Go to cut through a pancake and end up with a mouth full of polystyrene."

"Something more environmentally friendly for recycling not those..!" a third person chided.

Interestingly, among the fond memories of demolishing a Big Breakfast after an even bigger night and other nostalgic comments, there were also a couple of cautionary tales about the meal - such as this one.

"Did you know their plastic forks could do a fair bit of damage to a young child's lap when they cut too hard into their hotcake? I still have a little scar where I stabbed myself in the thigh haha," someone rather jovially wrote.

And, as you'd expect, there were a fair number of people who worked at McDonald's back in the day and recalled making the now infamous breakfast meals.

"Reckon I made 5000 of them working there in the 90’s," one former Maccas staff member wrote.

"Oh everyday I worked for McDonald’s this was my breakfast!! Miss these," someone else echoed.

"I lived on these in the early 00’s when I worked at Maccas," a third person said.

So, why exactly was the Big Breakfast discontinued in Australia - particularly when it is still available in the US and Thailand, for example? Well, there were plenty of suggestions as to why, but Yahoo Lifestyle has been unable to verify which, if any, are accurate.

"This would have worked back 20 years ago when people were more likely to sit inside a Macca’s store to have this ‘breakfast’", one person suggested "These days, Macca’s breakfast would be a drive-thru and this would be impossible to eat whilst driving."

"Apparently it’s too hard to make scrambled eggs now," suggested another person. "They have the hotcakes made in a factory, frozen and heated in a microwave now too. Mcdonald’s Australia isn’t interested in customer feedback, just money."

"Cost cutting. Same reason why they shrunk their burgers," another offered.

But perhaps the most intriguing response was from the fellow who said, "I used to work at Maccas yonks ago. The big breakfast was stopped because they considered the meat and the scrambled eggs being cooked on the same grill was a contamination."

Alas, whatever the reason for the Big Breakfast-shaped hole in our collective hearts, it looks like we have to come to terms with the fact that this staple of Aussie culture is gone for good.

But hey, those styrofoam containers will probably last forever.
