Luke Wilson Reprises His “Legally Blonde” Role on the “Today ”Show — with Savannah Guthrie as Elle Woods!
Wilson made a surprise appearance as his character from the beloved Reese Witherspoon-led rom-com franchise on the show's special Halloween episode
Luke Wilson is stepping back into the world of Legally Blonde!
The actor, 53, made a surprise appearance on the Halloween episode of the Today show on Thursday, Oct. 31, where he reprised his role of Emmett Richmond from the beloved rom-com franchise, opposite Savannah Guthrie as Elle Woods.
Recreating the famous scene where Emmett first meets Elle (famously played in the 2001 film and its 2003 sequel by Reese Witherspoon), Guthrie, 52, came out in the sorority-girl-turned-Harvard-law-student's signature pink courtroom getup, complete with a stuffed Bruiser the dog.
"You have Stromwell, huh?" Wilson, as Emmett, asked a stressed-out-looking Elle, going on to say, just like in the movie, "She did make me cry once. I mean, not in class — I waited till I got back to my room. But yeah, she'll kick you right in the —"
"Oh, do you want some nuts?" Guthrie quipped, pulling out a bag of the salty snacks.

After reciting more of the scene's lines — and spotlighting Elle's pink scented résumé ("I think it just adds a little something extra, don't you?", said Guthrie) — the anchor perfectly recreated Witherspoon's famous "bend and snap" move from the first film.
"Works every time," she said, before the two pretended to go off and grab a coffee together.
Later in the episode, Guthrie and her co-anchors — who went all out for the holiday as usual, dressing as characters from iconic movies like Beetlejuice, Titanic, Bring It On, Mrs. Doubtfire, Austin Powers, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Beverly Hills Cop for this year's "VHS Rewind" theme — spoke to Wilson about the future of the Legally Blonde universe.
After revealing to Guthrie and Hoda Kotb that he was "nervous" to reprise his role on the show and joking that it was "the closest I've gotten to doing Broadway," the actor admitted the lines "did not come back" to him as easily as one might think — and also praised how "committed" Witherspoon, 48, was to the role of Elle in the movies.
Additionally, he gave kudos to Guthrie for her bend-and-snap move: "The form was spot-on."

Asked about an update on Legally Blonde 3 and whether he'll be in it, Wilson told Guthrie and Kotb, 60, "Well, I hope there is. It would be really fun to do."
"You just never know. But I bet at some point down the line, while Reese and I can still do it," he continued, adding of their on-air recreation, "And this has to be very inspiring to Reese!"
Witherspoon confirmed that she's reprising her role of Elle in a third installment of the beloved franchise back in June 2018. Roughly a year later, she told Entertainment Tonight that she'd seen a version of the script but had yet to shoot anything.
For now, a Legally Blonde spinoff series, titled Elle, is being produced by Witherspoon's production company, Hello Sunshine, and Amazon MGM studios. The actress and producer even put out a casting call for a high-school version of Elle Woods for the show last month.
As for a third film, "I talked to Reese a couple of years ago and some of the other cast members," Wilson told Guthrie on the Today show earlier this year. "I think everybody would be up for doing it. But Reese is such a sharp person and I think she just wants to make sure that the script is really good, if it gets done."
