I'm A Celebrity's Robert Irwin opens up about continuing his dad's legacy

The Wildlife Warrior spills on joining I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! this season.

He’s been in the public eye since the day he was born thanks to his famous family, but now Robert Irwin is taking a major step down his own path.

The 20-year-old animal conservationist and TV personality is set to co-host the upcoming tenth season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! alongside Julia Morris, which he describes as “an incredible new chapter” in his life.

“I never thought this would happen. It just feels like an incredibly surreal full circle moment and a very big honour,” he tells Yahoo Lifestyle before he flies to South Africa later this month.

“It’s unexpected, but then at the same time when you really think about it, it's perfect. Like, it kind of makes sense, it’s sort of a natural fit. In a way it’s so new for me, but also what I've been doing since I was hatched out of the egg.”

Robert shares that it was “the most humbling thing” when he was approached to join the series, and he immediately said ‘yes’ once he was offered the gig.

“I'm a huge fan of the show, so being able to step onto that is just a privilege and a real honour,” he says.

One of the biggest reasons why Robert wanted to take on the role was to not only carry on with his family’s legacy but also continue establishing his own.

“I love that I have a real purpose and a legacy that I get to continue from my family, and my dad particularly, and I get to create my own - of wildlife conservation, of fun, of passion and positivity,” he details.

“And no show does it better than I'm A Celebrity when it comes to just fun, family, positive, let’s give it a go. Plus, every contestant’s working for a charity.”

Robert spills on working alongside Julia Morris

Robert went on to share that it’s “an absolute dream come true” getting to work alongside Julia Morris, who has hosted the show since it first launched in Australia in 2015.

“To step into this new world with someone who's just there to guide you through the process, and to just learn so much, it’s awesome,” he gushes, adding that he feels “so lucky to learn from the absolute master”.

“And then at the same time, this is what I've been doing all my life - jumping out of choppers, catching snakes, that’s just Tuesday. So it feels like it's the perfect synergy and it just could not get more perfect.”

Meanwhile, Julia admits she’s thrilled to have Robert join this year’s season to bring a fresh perspective to the series.

“It’s very, very rare in this industry that you get a chance to work on a show and then to reinvent it 10 years in, and not only reinvent it but reinvent it with someone who is already spectacularly adored in their own right,” she remarks.

“So to come together, we know that there's going to be explosions of joy, but we just don't know how often and how quickly we're going to start coming at us. So stand by, watch this space.”

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! premieres Sunday, March 24 on 10 and 10 Play.
