Each year, the Met Gala takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and fashion fans around the world tune in to see what their favourite celebrities have chosen to wear. This year's theme honours the Institute's new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," with the official dress code being “The Garden of Time.”

This year, the stars in attendance played with the theme, with some guests such as Zendaya, Tyla, Mindy Kaling and Greta Lee being praised for nailing their looks, and others - such as our very own Chris Hemsworth being slammed for not getting it right. As is the case every year, there was plenty of discourse around the theme and why some celebrities had seemingly chosen to ignore it altogether.

Known for pushing boundaries and keeping people on their toes, Doja Cat caused quite the stir as she left the Mark Hotel in NYC to head to the Met Gala...in a towel.

People immediately took to the internet to express their confusion/distaste/admiration for the singer's ensemble with some even comparing her look to previous one's worn by Rita Ora and Lady Gaga.

"Doja cat… what is this?" one baffled person wrote on X.

"I mean she def ready to sleep so on theme," someone replied.

"Not Doja Cat dressing up as Lady Gaga backstage of Oscars 2019," one person wrote with a side-by-side image of the two artists.

"Rita Ora did it first," another said, also showing a side-by-side of the singers, including Rita, at the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards.

"She’s kidding right?" someone else asked.

"Doja Cat wears a towel from Temu for the #MetGala," someone teased.

"When someone forgets to pick up your clothes from the cleaners," another joked.

Another celebrated, "The one Met Gala look I already own!"

"Doja Cat showing up in a post shower look to the met gala i am in love with that woman’s mind," another gushed.

One person went so far as to suggest that Kanye West may have had something to do with the unusual outfit given his history of dressing wife Biance Censori in a similarly near-naked way.

"Did Kanye dress Doja Cat for tonight's Met Gala?," one viewer asked on X. "At the star-studded event, where designers go all out to ensure everyone is dressed up, @DojaCat wore a towel. Was this Ye's idea?"

Others were flat out adamant that the 'Paint the Town Red' singer simply should not be allowed to attend dressed that way.

"So unclassy," one person said. "She’s making a joke of the Met Gala, stop inviting her."

"A mess, ban her immediately," someone else said.

Another wrote, "Doja Cat should be banned from the #metgala if this is the final look…"

The towel ensemble was not, in fact, Doja's final look for the event - although some fans didn't seem to appreciate her actual 'gown' either.

Changing into a wet t-shirt dress for the red carpet, Doja told Entertainment Tonight that she had gone with cotton as it's the 'most used flower' and felt 'poetic' and 'timeless'. She also revealed that the secret to her 'Wet Gala' look was a lot of hair gel.

"I'm performing, it's a show tonight," she explained, and, honestly, when she puts it like that, it makes so much sense!
