Here's Everything You Need To Know About The New "Hunger Games" Book — "Sunrise On The Reaping" — Plus The Best Tweets About It

This is not a drill: Suzanne Collins is writing another book set in the world of The Hunger Games.

This morning, it was announced by Scholastic that a fifth book in The Hunger Games series would be released on March 18, 2025.

The new book, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, is set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games. According to Scholastic, the book begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, aka the Second Quarter Quell.

The Second Quarter Quell is notably the year Haymitch Abernathy won the Hunger Games. He was the second victor from District 12 and the only living victor when Katniss and Peeta won with his mentorship during the 74th Hunger Games.

Prior to Sunrise on the Reaping, Suzanne teased Haymitch's Hunger Games in Catching Fire. To "celebrate" the 50th Hunger Games, four children were reaped from each district instead of only the standard two tributes.

This book also comes after we all now know that Haymitch wasn't the first District 12 tribute to win the Hunger Games, but rather, it was Lucy Gray Baird.

In a statement to the Associated Press about the new book, Suzanne said, "With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by [Scottish philosopher] David Hume's idea of implicit submission and, in his words, 'the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.'"

She continued, saying, "The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."

And, alongside the new book announcement, Lionsgate, the studio behind the previous The Hunger Games movies, announced that an adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping will hit theaters on Nov. 20, 2026.
