Yahoo Lifestyle Koji Fukada’s New Film ‘Love on Trial,’ About a Rising J-Pop Idol, Joins MK2’s EFM Slate (EXCLUSIVE)
Koji Fukada is set to direct “Love on Trial,” a film inspired by real cases in Japan where J-Pop idols have been sued for violating “no relationship” contracts.
“Love on Trial” reteams the renowned Japanese filmmaker with MK2 Films for the fourth time. They previously collaborated on “Love Life,” which competed at Venice in 2022, as well as “Harmonium” (Cannes’ Un Certain Regard), and “A Missing Girl” (Locarno and Toronto film festivals).

The film follows the story follows Mai, a rising J-Pop idol whose big break is threatened when she falls in love, violating the “no love” clause in her contract. As her relationship is exposed, Mai finds herself entangled in a public trial, her life spiraling into chaos. Ultimately, the film explores the harsh realities of fame and the fight for personal freedom.

It provides a powerful commentary on the complexities of idol culture, personal freedom, and love, while highlighting the gender disparities and injustices that affect individuals, not only in Japan, but globally.”
Toho, the high profile Japanese company behind “Monster,” “Godzilla Minus One” and “Knockonwood,” is producing and will handle local distribution. French banner Survivance is co-producing. “Love on Trial” is currently in post-production and is expected to be delivered in 2025.
