The Great Australian Dream might be home ownership — but after buying your home, the next rite of passage for many Aussies is arguably ‘the renos’. But as the current cost of living continues to bite, and building and material costs remain high in the wake of Covid, renovating has quickly become a pipe dream for the average punter.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t make small, cosmetic changes and spruce up your home without breaking the bank. In fact, one Kmart shopper recently shared how she upgraded her bathroom for just $26.50 — and the difference is incredible!

“I got the idea from a DIY Facebook group where they had vinyl-wrapped their kitchen cabinets and it completely transformed it,” Kirstie told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“I’m loving the upgrade from bland white and beige,” she wrote in a Kmart Facebook group after sharing before and after images of her bathroom transformation.

The entire project was completed using Kmart’s self-adhesive film in ‘sage’ ($7.50), 3-metre self-adhesive tile roll in ‘sage’ ($2), and large oak and gold-look handles ($8.50 per two-pack).

“These products are great to get creative with, recycle or upcycle items, or for a non permanent way to introduce a colour pop into any home space,” Vault Interiors Property Styling founder Justine Wilson explained to Yahoo Lifestyle.

“The sage green here and gold hardware is really on trend, as earth tone colours are very popular such as brown, olive and sage tones, and rust or red tones. The gold updates the bathroom and can tie into accessories such as vases or canisters to complete the look, as she has done with the green in the bathroom mat and soap dispenser.”

Fellow Kmart fans flooded Kirstie’s comments in praise of her effortless bathroom transformation, including one who said it looked “so much nicer now”.

“Great upstyle,” another commenter wrote.

“What a great difference,” a third chimed in. “Beautiful.”

If you’re looking to get into a bit of DIY yourself, there are plenty of easy styling hacks to refresh your space without blowing the budget. Products like self-adhesive tiles or film are perfect for temporary upgrades, or even for renters looking to personalise their home. You could use them in your bathroom, as this Kmart shopper has done, or even in the kitchen to create a DIY splashback.

Creator Lily Adams transformed her kitchen earlier this year using Kmart’s peel-and-stick tiles, sharing a video to TikTok about how foolproof the process was.

“It was actually super easy to do,” she said. “I added some downlights from IKEA, and spiced it up with some decor. It turned out so nice and such a cost effective way to jazz up your kitchen.”

Wilson added that using peel-and-stick vinyl to refresh cabinetry or even wallpaper was such a great and inexpensive way to uplift your home.

“These products are also really wonderful if you are a tenant in a rental, so long as you select the removable versions,” she said. “It’s a great way to add your personality and stamp, making a rental feel more like your home.”

Changing outdoor and cabinet handles can also spruce up a space without doing too much. If you’re renting, just make sure to change the handles back when you vacate.

The best thing about projects like these is that they’re easy for DIY beginners, and stick-on products also come in a variety of colours and finishes. Wilson advised tying them in with your overall interior scheme by choosing complementary colours or patterns, or adding visual interest by opting for a wood-look, tile-look or wallpaper pattern.

Happy DIY-ing!
