Kmart and Bunnings shopper's budget Christmas decoration hack praised: 'Brilliant'

The festive season is upon us, and unless you're an absolute Grinch, chances are you've been thinking about how to decorate your Christmas tree, house, and even office space to celebrate. Maybe you're one of those people who has already put up your Christmas tree or adorned your house or apartment with a festive theme — no judgement here, it's never too early.

While the holiday season is one of the most joyous times of year — think lots of parties, seeing family and friends, Christmas decorations and sweet treats, lazy days by the pool or beach without having to worry about work over all the public holidays — there's no denying it's just getting a little too expensive to live these days.

So, suppose you've opted not to shed your festive spirit but are looking to save some dollars while you decorate. In that case, one clever shopper, Emily, has used Kmart and Bunnings to put together a cheap festive decoration, garnering praise for their innovative idea.

Emily told Yahoo Lifestyle that she created the giant weatherproof lollipops with a mix of products from Bunnings, Kmart and Officeworks, saying she spotted the first giant tinsel decorations at Kmart for $10.

"I saw these decorations in Kmart and immediately they looked like lollipops to me, so had to grab them. They were so easy and inexpensive to do as well!" Emily told Yahoo Lifestyle.

"We’re still in the process of decorating outside but we want a gingerbread theme. I made these guys out of plywood with the kids. Some of the users suggested I could add some lights to the lollipops, so that’s the next thing on my to-do list."

Explaining the process further, Emily said, "I used the giant tinsel decoration from Kmart ($10) and a white powder-coated steel rod from Bunnings for $6.50. Plus, some clear cellophane wrap from Officeworks. I fastened with a zip tie and popped some ribbon over the top. Voila!"

Others came through with some suggestions. "Oh my. I love this. At Halloween next year, you could turn your house into a gingerbread house using cardboard and hand out lollies as a witch, Hansel and Gretel style," someone said.
