King Charles' coronation: How to watch the ceremony live

King Charles III and his consort Camilla will be officially crowned the new king and queen at an elaborate ceremony at Westminster Abbey on May 6.

Charles became king on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8 last year, aged 96 after a record 70 years on the throne.

But the official coronation – replete with royal pageantry – will take place on Saturday, with dignitaries from around the world and hundreds of specially invited guests attending.

The 72-year-old is the oldest British monarch to ascend the throne, with hundreds of thousands of Britains expected to turn out to cheer on the King and Queen.

But across the world, millions are expected to watch the event as it unfolds live online and on TV, including in Australia.

For those keen on the big event, Sky News will air two specials back-to-back on Friday. At 8pm AEST tune into The Royal Report: Coronation Special, followed by a new documentary, Born To Be King, at 9pm AEST, featuring unique archival footage revealing the life, loves and passions of King Charles III.

Here are ways you can watch the coronation on Saturday

On Saturday, Sky News host Peter Stefanovic will start the coverage at 4pm AEST, live from Westminster Abbey, as distinguished guests, international royal families and the British Royals start arriving for the ceremony.

Then it will be the Sky News UK team, including royal events commentator Alastair Bruce, whose unrivalled knowledge of the event will guide viewers through the historic ceremonial proceedings.

On Sunday, May 7, Sky News will have an encore of the coronation ceremony at midday and will produce a special edition of The Royal Report that focuses on a wrap-up of the weekend’s event.

Sky News Australia’s coronation coverage will be available to stream on SkyNews.com.au and to listen to on Sky News Radio, available on iHeartRadio.

The coronation service itself is expected to begin at 8pm – 11am AEST, with an ancient and religious service.

Half an hour later, a showing at Buckingham Palace balcony is also scheduled before festivities wrap up with a flypast.

Most major free-to-air broadcasters will air also all or parts of the coronation event on Saturday.

The ABC, as well as Channel 9 and affiliates 9Gem and 9Now, will begin coverage of the event at 5pm, with Peter Overton and Ally Langdon reporting live in London.

Channel 10 and Channel Seven meanwhile begin their programs between 6-7pm. Channel Seven’s Sunrise program will feature live updates throughout the week, hosted by David 'Kochie' Koch, Victoria Arbitor, and Rob Johnson.

Coverage of the festivities will continue on Channel Seven into next week, with a special live screening at 5.30am of the coronation concert. The event will be re-aired at 7.30pm.

ABC and SkyNews will also live-stream their coverage on their respective streaming platforms, ABC iView and the SkyNews website and app.

Alternatively, streaming services Britbox and Stan will also broadcast the event live.
