Set in North Philadelphia in 1993, the series follows “12-year-old Kevin Hart, whose wild imagination and unshakable optimism constantly collide with his neighborhood’s harsh realities,” according to the official synopsis. “Through it all, Lil Kev navigates his rocky upbringing with humor, hustle, and heart, surrounded by the unforgettable characters who will propel him to comedy superstardom.”

In addition to Hart, the voice cast includes Wanda Sykes (The Upshaws) as Nancy, Kevin’s God-fearing mother who “juggles night shifts as an E.R. nurse while waging a one-woman war to keep Kev on track.” Her efforts are thwarted by Kevin’s mischievous older brother, his trainwreck father’s failed romantic gestures and Nancy’s formerly incarcerated brother, Richard Jr. (voiced by black-ish’s Deon Cole.)

The cast also includes Gerald “Slink” Johnson (White Men Can’t Jump), Jamar Neighbors (The Carmichael Show), Cree Summer (A Different World), Anjelah Johnson-Reye (MADtv) and Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams (The Ms. Pat Show).

“I’m excited to deepen the partnership between Hartbeat and BET on a project so close to my heart,” Hart said in a statement. “With comedy veterans Wanda and Deon alongside me, we’re bringing Lil Kev  to life — a hilarious celebration of stories inspired by my Philly roots, a place that will always be home to me.”
