Kelsey Grammer on 'Cheers' feud with Ted Danson: 'It was when I was drinking a lot'
Over 30 years after "Cheers" aired its final episode, two of the show's biggest stars are putting their beef to bed.
Kelsey Grammer, who played Frasier Crane on both the program and the "Fraiser" spinoff and reboot, told the New York Post in an interview published Friday that his feud with cast mate Ted Danson "got a little blown out of proportion."
"There really wasn't an argument. It was at a time in my life when I was actually going through a lot of self-doubt, self-loathing, honestly," he told the outlet. "It was when I was drinking a lot. Ted had just come up and said, 'You know, I'm kind of mad at you that sometimes you don't show up ready to go.' And I said, 'OK, I respect that.' And that actually was sort of it.
"Now, maybe what happened for Ted was he stepped away from what might have been a better friendship," the actor continued. "Maybe he just had to protect himself. I don't really know. But, I said, 'Thanks.' We were fine with that."
Grammer's comments follow a recent appearance on "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" − a podcast co-hosted by Danson and fellow ex-"Cheers" star Woody Harrelson − in which he revealed he and Danson had fallen out.
Danson presented a sort of mea culpa, apologizing for not ending the freeze. "I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer. … I feel like it's my bad, my doing," Danson said.
"I apologize to you and me that I sat back," he told Grammer, after recalling a tense exchange on set and getting "stuck" in the feud in the years that followed.
Grammer accepted the apology and shared a fond memory of Danson in return.
"You said something wonderful to me, though, too, that I've always, I quote to other people," Grammer told Danson. "When I turned 40, you came up and you said, 'You know what it means, don't you? Now that you're 40, it means you're finally worth having a conversation with.'"
"I always loved that," he said, "And I've repeated it. And my love for you has always been as easy as the day. You know, as easy as the sunrise."
On the podcast, Grammer admitted his time on "Cheers" involved some "self-medicating" with cocaine and alcohol to cope with what had been a difficult life.
"Cheers" served as a launching pad for both men who, now in their late 60s and 70s, have both enjoyed long careers. Danson recently starred in Netflix "Man on the Inside," a cozy mystery spin on the classic P.I. format, while Grammer revived "Frasier" for a reboot of the show on Paramount +.
