Keke Palmer Says Mom's Cameo in “One of Them Days” 'Made Me So Happy': She 'Showed Up and Showed Out' (Exclusive)

Keke Palmer's mom Sharon gets her moment to shine in One of Them Days.

Palmer, 31, stars opposite SZA in the new Los Angeles–set buddy comedy produced by Issa Rae. Speaking to PEOPLE, the actress says she'll "forever love" the production team for having her mother do a cameo. Adds Rae with a smile, "She killed that."

"It just made me so happy," says Palmer. "Yes, my mom showed up and showed out. She was up in there telling the other landlord to put her door back on." Sharon is credited as "Irate Tenant" for her scene. "Make sure you look out for that sneak peek of Sharon Palmer, the original," adds the proud daughter.

Palmer says it makes her "so happy to share everything with my mom."

"We've been partners since I was a kid," the former child star explains. "She's taught me everything I know about my own dang-on brand. And I just appreciate her. So I think for me, for her to get these opportunities through my growth in this industry, it just feels like it continues to shine that light back on that person she was when she was trying to do music and act and all the things she made a way for me to do. I love that we get to throw it back to her in that way."

Palmer's family is from Chicago, and her parents, Sharon and Larry, met while in drama school as aspiring actors. Sharon, who later worked as a teacher, said on the Today show in 2021 that she pushed Palmer to pursue entertainment as a kid so she could later go to college.

"I never expected any of this. I didn't do it for money or fame. It was college," said Sharon at the time. "I wanted her to go to college. I wanted my kids to go to college. And I wanted them to have a better life."

One of Them Days is about besties and roommates Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) who, desperate to make rent by the end of the day or face eviction, get into wild hijinks while putting their friendship to the test.

Palmer and costar SZA, 35, say they had a blast working together two years after meeting on their December 2022 episode of Saturday Night Live.

"Every day, 12 hours of real-life conversation. It was like a crash course, like a speed date but very intense," SZA, who makes her big-screen debut, says of bonding with Palmer. "We actually liked each other. We was gonna get married at the end. I was gonna say 'I do.' "

Palmer agrees, "It was giving that."

One of Them Days is in theaters now.
