Katie Holmes hits out at trust fund rumours about daughter Suri

Suri Cruise, the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, made headlines last week following reports she recently received a multi-million dollar trust fund from the Mission: Impossible star after turning 18 in April. However, Dawson's Creek actress Holmes has shut down the report about her daughter, taking to Instagram to say the story, reported by the Daily Mail, was "completely false".

Tom and Katie split in 2012 when Suri was six years old, and the 45-year-old actress has had full custody ever since. It is believed Suri has had very little contact with her father since the divorce.

The Daily Mail article quoted a source as saying Suri recently received a 'substantial' trust fund from her famous father. It claimed, "It is part of the divorce deal that a trust fund provided by Tom Cruise be shared with daughter Suri Cruise when she turns 18, and it is substantial."

"She was allowed to access it when she turned 18 in April. The rest of the money will become available to her once she enters her 30s. The trust fund was carefully constructed so that she does not get all the money at once and becomes overwhelmed."

However, Katie posted a screenshot of the story to her Instagram and captioned it, "Completely false. Daily Mail, you can stop making stuff up."

Fans were quick to share support for the star, with one user writing, "We know who is responsible for raising, protecting and supporting that amazing young lady @katieholmes. Everything else is just useless noise!"

"Katie, you are an extraordinary person and you have our full support," another said.

"Keep doing it Katie, we all trust you," a third wrote.

Suri and Tom's fractured relationship

After Katie and Tom's divorce, the actor hasn't been photographed with his daughter in over a decade. According to The Mirror, Tom is believed to have "chosen not to see his daughter" for the past 11 years.

After turning 18, Suri legally dropped 'Cruise' and is now known as Suri Noelle, taking on her mum's middle name.

"It was entirely Tom's decision not to see Suri," the source claimed.

Tom, who is also the father of two children he adopted with Nicole Kidman, Connor and Isabella Cruise, told Vanity Fair in 2006, "My whole life I have always wanted to be a father. I always said to myself that my children would be able to depend on me, and I would always be there for them and love them - that I'd never make a promise to my kids I couldn't keep."

Speaking at a deposition in November 2013, when asked why he flew from London, where he was shooting Jack Reacher, to Pittsburgh for a Scientology event, he said, "Listen, when there is a divorce... things change. And it's more complicated," adding that the church event was "important" to him.

Speaking about why he didn't invite his daughter to see him, he said, "You have to ask for permission and organise schedules to make things happen. So it's not an ideal situation."

Tom wasn't with his daughter when she celebrated her 18th birthday and was instead seen partying at Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday party.

A source told Heat, Tom is feeling guilty about missing so much of her life, but insists that he hasn’t completely shut Suri out of his life, and does get updates from time to time. He made that deal to allow her and her mother to live their own lives because that was what Katie wanted.

"But now Suri’s officially an adult, he feels she’s old enough to make her own choices, and he wants to reach out and build a better relationship with her.”

Suri is currently attending Carnegie Mellon College and is believed to be studying dance and theatre.

Katie previously spoke about Siri's strong personality, telling InStyle in 2020, "I love her so much."

"My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality, to make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident and able. And to know it. She came out very strong — she's always been a strong personality."

"She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it. Then she's like, 'Okay, I'm going to try the next thing,' " the actress said. "She's very focused and a hard worker."

Katie also recently spoke to Town & Country in September this year and shared how she felt about Suri going to college.

"I’m proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy," she said. "I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that."
