Kath & Kim anniversary special divides viewers: 'Waste of time'
After months of anticipation, Channel Seven’s long-awaited TV special Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life finally aired on Sunday night celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary.
And while the program delivered on its promise to reunite stars Jane Turner, Gina Riley, Glenn Robbins, Peter Rowsthorn and Magda Szubanksi, fans were disappointed that they only filmed around ten minutes of new footage.
Instead, the 74-minute special included scenes from the original series, bloopers and never-before-seen moments, and recent interviews with stars such as Kylie Minogue, Carson Kressley and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard speaking about the show.
Viewers quickly took to social media to slam Channel Seven and express their disappointment at the lack of new content.
“Anyone else feeling cheated that we're not getting a whole new episode,” one person wrote, while another added, “Well that was a waste of time”.

“That was extremely disappointing! Just rehashes of very old material,” a third remarked, followed by someone else who claimed it was “false advertising”.
“I was looking forward to the #kathandkim special cos I was led to believe it was new stuff shot at the house... instead, it was a badly green-screened clip show with interviews from a former PM and other randos that had me wondering if the show was ever funny! Effluent indeed,” a different user shared.
“That had to be the worst episode of Kath & Kim, a recap episode is such a cop-out. Very lazy,” another tweeted.
‘Still hilarious’
Meanwhile, other fans praised the special and were thrilled to see two of Australia’s most iconic comedians back on their screens.
“The #kathandkim special was basically a clip show but I loved it anyway. Great memories and still hilarious,” one viewer said.
“Loved the new ‘Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life’ special. It was ‘noice’ & brought back lots of memories. Such an iconic Melbourne show & funniest Australian TV show ever,” another shared.

“The die-hard #kathandkim fans know this was always promoted as 10 mins of new footage and that it was a montage-type special. It’s never been said that it was a new episode. Read your 'istory books peoples. Be grateful they even did anything! It was good,” someone else tweeted.
Channel Seven is set to air a second special titled Kath & Kim: 20 Preposterous Years Monday at 7:30pm.
