Kate Middleton Wore a Rare Casual Outfit in Prince William's Touching Birthday Tribute

The ensemble featured a quintessentially British print, too.

A large component of being a member of the British royal family is dressing the part, and for Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, that requires a fleet of enviable dresses, glittering tiaras, and impeccably tailored ensembles depending on the event. But sometimes, Middleton gets the chance to dress down—and did exactly that in a photo that Prince William posted of her for her 43rd birthday on January 9.

"To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis and I are so proud of you. Happy Birthday, Catherine. We love you," William captioned a black and white photo of his wife, smiling for the camera.

In the photo, Middleton traded sleek coats and heels for something more casual. She wore a dark blazer jacket rolled and cuffed at the sleeves with a crisp white button-up top. Completing the outfit was a checked plaid printed scarf worn around the neck and fitted dark jeans with light whiskering at the hips. The princess's hair was worn down and in loose waves around her shoulders.

Middleton is hoping to have a better birthday this year. “This birthday is going to be memorable in so many ways—it will mark the start of a new and hopefully happier year, and the end of one that has been brutal for the whole family,” royal correspondent Jennie Bond told OK! (via The Mirror) in December. “While some women might find the prospect of turning 43 a bit daunting, Catherine will, I am sure, be delighted that she is able to enjoy her birthday in comparatively good health, though of course she is still recovering. Every day must now be extra precious for the Princess, and every birthday a cause for grateful celebration.”

The Princess of Wales was dealing with an array of health complications, with her abdominal surgery taking place just days after her 42nd birthday last year. "That, of course, was followed by the shock of her cancer diagnosis, so this will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate,” Bon continued.

As for what Middleton has in store for this year, Bond speculates that William, along with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis “will shower her with gifts, perhaps a collection of pampering products like luxurious bath oils and fabulously scented candles. Maybe [Prince] William will buy her some silk pyjamas or cashmere jumpers—things that are soft on skin that has been bruised by surgery and treatment."

William may have even surprised Middleton with breakfast in bed, “even though he says he's not a very good cook, Catherine did tell Mary Berry that he’s quite good at breakfasts so maybe a tray complete with a rose will arrive early for her.”
