The 24-time Grammy Award winner said his decision to see a new doctor was inspired by his wife, Bianca Censori. “My wife took me to do that, because she said, ‘Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar. I’ve seen bipolar people before.’”

West was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 after experiencing a psychiatric emergency that sent him to the hospital. According to the “Gold Digger” rapper, that diagnosis was inaccurate.

“Come to find that it’s really a case of autism that I have,” West said. “And autism takes you to a Rain Man thing, where you’re like, ‘Oh man, I’m gonna wear this [Donald] Trump hat,’ ‘cause I like Trump in general. And then when people tell you to not do it, you just get on that one point.”

West identified that intense focus on one topic or issue as his “problem.”

“When fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way—just because,” he said.

The father of four went on to describe his health challenges as being “so difficult” for others in his life. “This is, like, a grown man,” he said. “You can’t tell him. You can’t take control of his bank account, you can’t control what I’m saying on Twitter.”

Laboy followed up with a question about whether West has taken any medications in the wake of his autism diagnosis.

“I haven’t taken the medications since I found out that it wasn’t bipolar, that wasn’t the right diagnosis,” West shared.
