JoJo Said Working On "Aquamarine" Brought Out Body Insecurities As She Noticed She "Was Not As Skinny As The Other Girls"
Joanna "JoJo" Levesque opened up about what it was like filming the 2006 family comedy Aquamarine and the impact it had on her self-esteem.
On Wednesday's episode of The Viall Files podcast, the "Leave (Get Out)" singer took a trip down memory lane while promoting her debut memoir Over the Influence, to share what it was like working on the movie at such an impressionable age.
Aquamarine was about two teens (Jojo and Emma Roberts) who discover that mermaids are actually real when one washes ashore. It's a sassy mermaid named Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) who enlists the girls' help in proving to her father that love with a human can exist.
JoJo said this was the "first big movie" that she'd ever worked on. She was 14 at the time, revealing it “brought out some insecurities in me.”
While using her arms to mimic a larger body frame, JoJo added, "I was not as skinny as the other girls. I felt really like — next to them."
“So from a young age, I think, we're all kind of aware, or we're measuring ourselves up next to other girls — and I was no different."
Despite that, the 33-year-old artist enjoyed her time on set, especially filming in Australia, where she learned a lot.
"When you're a child and you're working, you start to see yourself and your body as something that's a commodity,” JoJo told People.
“I think that if a child is working and making money, there needs to be other things that are just for the joy of being a child.”
