Jill Biden Seemingly Sends a Political Message With Her Inauguration Day Outfit

Former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden stuck with her tradition of wearing American designers when she attended the inauguration of Donald Trump in a Ralph Lauren wrap coat—but it was the color of her outfit that really got people talking.

While Hillary Clinton chose a dark blue pantsuit for the event—coordinating with former President Bill Clinton's dark navy suit and blue tie—Dr. Biden wore a purple coat with matching pumps and gloves. Former President Joe Biden, meanwhile, wore a dark overcoat and a purple tie to complement his wife's palette.

By choosing to wear purple (which blends Democrats' and Republicans' identifying colors, blue and red, into one shade), Dr. Biden seemed to send a strong political message about the importance of both sides coming together to unify the country, as Marie Claire reported—which would make sense, considering the "symbolic approach" she's taken to her wardrobe in the past.

While her longtime stylist Bailey Moon didn't confirm whether or not Dr. Biden chose purple to make a point, as he told the outlet, Dr. Biden "often used her wardrobe as a canvas for sending messages."

"Whether it was her ivory Gabriela Hearst coat with the embroidery of the flowers of all the states and territories sending a message of unity, or the sunflower added to her Lapointe dress as a display of support for Ukraine," he continued.

In fact, according to Moon, Dr. Biden even has a saying about dressing to send a message: "Fashion communicates without speaking a word."

Moon also explained that "Dr. Biden was keen to support a diverse array of American designers" and that they were "lucky to work with such a talented group, ranging from household names like Ralph Lauren to newer voices in the industry like Markarian, One/Of, and Marion Parke, a shoe brand based in Minnesota."

In an Instagram post on Monday, Jan. 20, Moon expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to work with Dr. Biden over the years.

"Endless gratitude to Anthony, Jordan, Jacob– all of the designers, PR, and to @nychinchilla for being an incredible tailor and partner throughout."
