Jeremy Allen White to Star in Netflix Adaptation of André Aciman Novel “Enigma Variations”
The ‘Bear’ star will also executive produce the limited series, based on the ‘Call Me By Your Name’ writer’s 2017 novel
Jeremy Allen White has a new role on the horizon.
The Bear actor, 33, is set to star in and executive produce a forthcoming Netflix limited series based on André Aciman’s 2017 novel Enigma Variations. Variety was the first to report the news on Jan. 27, and states that the series is currently in development.
The novel chronicles the life of a man named Paul, and the romances he develops with men and women from adolescence into adulthood. Spanning Southern Italy, New England and New York City, Paul’s “hopes, denials, fears and regrets are always ready to lay their traps. Yet the dream of love lingers,” the book’s synopsis reads.
White is set to play the protagonist, Paul.
The series, which Aciman will also executive produce, marks the second adaptation of the author's work. The Italian-American writer’s 2007 novel, Call Me By Your Name, was adapted by Luca Guadagnino into a 2017 film starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
The book and film follow the romantic relationship between 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Chalamet) and doctoral student Oliver (Hammer) in Northern Italy during the summer of 1983.

The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Original Song for Sufjan Stevens’ “Mystery of Love.” It ultimately won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Aciman published the novel’s sequel, Find Me, in 2019.
“I was on a deadline for another novel, but this was irresistible because it was exactly like love,” Aciman wrote in an essay for The Guardian, of developing the original novel. “I fell in love with Elio, I fell in love with Oliver, fell in love with their love and with this whole new world I was cobbling together minute by minute.”

Aciman is also the author of a number of nonfiction books, including the 1996 memoir Out of Egypt, the 2021 essay collection Homo Irrealis and the 2024 memoir Roman Year, about his childhood in Rome after his family was expelled from Egypt.
White currently stars as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in the FX series The Bear, and has garnered three Golden Globes and Emmy Awards for the role. The actor is also set to play Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere, which follows the creation of the musician’s 1982 album Nebraska.
