Jennifer Affleck is getting real about having a modern Mormon marriage.

The MomToker and star of Hulu's The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives tells PEOPLE that the changing financial dynamics that have come with her success in social media and content creation have provided some challenges for her and her husband Zac Affleck.

"I definitely think it was tricky for me and my husband at first because he was the provider for the first couple of years. And it wasn't like he was just making little money — he made great money and he also comes from a very wealthy, traditional family," she tells PEOPLE.

"So I think it was very normal for him to be the provider and for me to be at home and be a stay-at-home wife and mother."

"We're all equal and provide different things at different times," Jennifer notes. "I'll be providing now, and maybe he'll provide once he's done with medical school and roles are switched."

Zac's medical school acceptance is one of the hurdles the couple confronts in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

"But I think for a long time, it was not like we were competing with each other, but it was very much like we were comparing who provides more," she notes. "Now we've seen it as we're a team, and we're just working together, and roles are going to look different in different stages of our life."

The pair began dating in 2018 after meeting on a Mormon dating app called Mutual. Zac later proposed at Top of the Rock in New York City in January 2019.

The couple tied the knot on June 28, 2019, in Newport Beach, Calif. The ceremony was held at the local LDS temple, while the reception took place on a large yacht.

“I knew Zac was the one when I realized I couldn't imagine life without him & his amazing qualities,” Jennifer wrote on Instagram ahead of their wedding. “I’m grateful to have someone who loves me unconditionally, puts me first, & makes me want to be a better fiancé, friend, daughter and person. Can’t forget he makes me the happiest girl alive."

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives premieres on Friday, Sept. 6 on Hulu.
