Speaking with PEOPLE at a Read with Jenna event in New York City on Feb 10, the Today show co-anchor, 43, revealed that the Gilmore Girls star was a fan of her many book recommendations.

“I'll just say that Lauren Graham, who was the mom on Gilmore Girls, was like, ‘I love your book recommendations,’” Bush Hager said. “And I was like, ‘I loved your television show.’”

Bush Hager spoke with Graham, 57, who stars in the comedy series The Z-Suite, on a Jan. 31 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends. Bush Hager leads the show with a rotating list of celebrity co-hosts, following the departure of Hoda Kotb from Today in January.

Bush Hager told PEOPLE that she was enamored with the novel, which chronicles the decades-long marriage between a couple who meet in Central Park.

“I loved this book so much,” Bush Hager said. “I was weeping ... Who could tell you that you would meet two characters in their 70s and you would fall so immersed in the story and history of their love [and] everything that goes along with it, that, when you close the book, you would miss these people?”

“I love to read, and I also love people who love to read,” Bush Hager said. “I love having conversations with my sister [Barbara] about books that we both are really into, or my friends. I feel things aren't linear. I wasn't like, 'Oh, I can't wait to start a book club.' It was sort of a dare.”

In January, Bush Hager also launched her book imprint Thousand Voices Books, in collaboration with The Random House Publishing Group, part of Penguin Random House LLC. Thousand Voices Books will publish a variety of genres, including romance, literary fiction, memoir and romantasy — and Bush Hager says the new endeavor has led to a unique problem for herself.

“I'm putting myself in a precarious situation, working, running a national book club, and also  publishing books,” Bush Hager said. “I've started a mad, mad reading trend, so I need to actually write down how many books [I read].”
