Jelly Roll joins “American Idol” as first-ever artist in residence
The singer "will work closely with the 'Idol' hopefuls, giving them firsthand advice on how to navigate the journey."
Jelly Roll is rolling into American Idol — but not as a judge.
The "I Am Not Okay" singer is boarding the singing competition show as an artist in residence, making him the first musician to hold that title on the series.
Jelly Roll previously appeared on season 22 of the show last year as a mentor to half of the remaining contestants in Honolulu. He also performed his song "Halfway to Hell" during his appearance.
Since Jelly Roll is the first person to serve as an Idol artist in residence, the role's responsibilities aren't immediately clear. However, a press release states that the singer will become "a permanent fixture this season and will work closely with the Idol hopefuls, giving them firsthand advice on how to navigate the journey."

Mr. Roll announced the news in a goofy promo video with Idol host Ryan Seacrest. "I'm American Idol's artist in residence!" he said as he picked Seacrest up off the ground and spun him around like a small child. "I feel like I'm giving them the energy they need. I'm uplifting and trying to get 'em going."

Seacrest seemed to enjoy being swept off his feet. "I like it. It feels good when you helicopter me," he said. "I need you every day."
Jelly Roll's addition to season 23 furthers the show's growing emphasis on contemporary country voices. Idol previously announced that former winner Carrie Underwood would join the show as a judge following Katy Perry's departure, making her the first new judge since Idol moved from Fox to ABC. Fellow country singer Luke Bryan is also returning as a judge, making Lionel Richie the only non-country artist in a prominent role on the show.
Jelly Roll's Idol gig follows the busiest year of his career thus far. He released his 10th studio album, Beautifully Broken, in October, and embarked on a 52-city tour in support of the album in August. He's set to continue that tour with dozens more shows across the U.S. and Canada throughout the spring and summer.
The musician also collaborated with Eminem on the song "Somebody Save Me" in July, appeared on Tulsa King opposite Sylvester Stallone in September, and served as the musical guest on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, also in September.
