Jasmine Guy has had daughters on TV, but off camera, she is mom to her daughter, Imani Guy Duckette.

The A Different World alum welcomed her first and only child in 1999 with her ex-husband, Terrence Mitchell Duckett. Jasmine told Tamron Hall in 2021 that after her divorce, she “didn't want money to go shopping,” she just wanted herself and her “kid to be okay.”

The mom of one revealed in an episode of OWN’s Who Am I series in 2014 that she would pray to not let herself get in the way of who her daughter was supposed to be. Jasmine pointed out that “childhood was one thing,” in reference to her daughter now growing up and becoming her own person, but having another “woman mind to talk to and relate to and, you know, try to get to clean the bathroom, it's a little tricky.”

Jasmine became a mother in the late ‘90s.

Imani was born on March 28, 1999, making her an Aries. Jasmine celebrated her daughter’s 17th birthday in 2016, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “Happy Birthday Imani! She's 17 today!”

When her daughter was 18 months old, Jasmine sat down with Regis Philbin for an interview during which she noted that Imani’s name means “faith.”

On the show, Philibin held up a photo of little Imani that one of Jasmine’s friends took of her at a birthday party.

“It's like the best picture I have of her,” Jasmine admitted. “All my little photo sessions look whack. I cut off her head,” adding that when she took her daughter's photo was always pictured “drooling.”

Imani’s mom and dad split less than 10 years after her birth. Jasmine filed for divorce from her husband in 2008. At the time, a rep for the actress told TMZ, “Jasmine would like to say that there is no villain in this scenario and that she is ending her marriage due to irreconcilable differences.”

The rep added, “Jasmine would also like to thank everyone who wishes her and her family well, and asks that the press and the public allow her and her husband their privacy to work through what is a very difficult time."

In the spring of 2016, Imani made her stage debut acting in Serial Black Face. According to ArtsATL, she played 15-year-old Latoya in the play about the Atlanta Child Murders, which were a series of killings between 1979 and 1981.

Supportive mom Jasmine encouraged others to watch Serial Black Face, writing on her Instagram at the time,“See my baby in her first play! Until April 24.”

She attended NYU

Imani graduated from high school in 2017, and went on to attend New York University. Jasmine revealed in a 2018 Instagram post that her daughter was currently studying at the New York City-based university.

Imani is described as a “multi-hyphenated artist," according to New York’s All Street Gallery's profile of her, who also noted that she “makes sense of the world through acting, writing, and visual art.”

Jasmine’s daughter had her first solo art show, an exhibition called “Paper Cuts,” in 2024 in N.Y.C.

“Paper Cuts is an exploration of two opposing forces within me. Growing up in the South, I realized some of the stigmas and expectations of black fortitude seeped into my developing belief systems. Those ideals clashed with the very real, powerful emotions that flooded my mind and refused to be denied,” Imani said of the exhibition on the All Street website.

“This caused a constant internal dialogue-turned-argument that left me exhausted, stagnant, and suspicious. 'Are you even Black? Are you even depressed? Can you be both?' Paper Cuts was born to frame my questions about my identity, strength, and fragility,” she added.

Her mom is supportive of her

Proud mom Jasmine shared her daughter’s “Paper Cuts” piece with her Instagram followers in 2021.

The Vampire Diaries actress wrote in the caption that she found the piece “very moving.” Jasmine also modeled a coat that Imani painted for her in a post in 2019. Alongside, the TV star wrote, “The beautiful coat my baby painted for me.”

She and her mom both lived in Harlem

During a 2021 appearance on the Tamron Hall Show, Jasmine spoke about her then-22-year-old daughter living in Harlem.

“I love the experience that she's having in New York. It's similar to mine because I left home at 17 to dance with Alvin Ailey and I lived on 157th street for like seven years,” she shared.

Jasmine added, “Learning how to pay bills, learning that you have to clean your own apartment. Yes, diva!”
