Hulu Sets Docuseries On Mommy Vlogger & Convicted Child Abuser Ruby Franke

Olly Lambert, who directed BBC’s Ukraine: The People’s Fight and Netflix’s Aftershock, will direct.

Last February, Franke was sentenced to at least four years in prison, but which could be as much as 60 years, for child abuse. She appeared in court alongside her former business partner Jodi Hildebrandt, who received a similar sentence, after the Utah prosecutor said that two of Franke’s children – aged nine and 11 at the time – lived in a “concentration camp-like setting”. The women were arrested in August 2023 after Franke’s malnourished 12-year-old son climbed out of a window at Hildebrandt’s house in Ivins, Utah, and ran to a neighbour’s house in search of food and water.

For years, the Frankes’ YouTube channel had documented a wholesome, happy family life, with 2.5 million subscribers tuning in at its peak. As the cracks began to show, the family turned to counselor Hildebrandt for guidance – and rapidly found themselves trapped in a nightmare.

The series marks the first time Shari and Chad, the Frankes’ two eldest adult children, and Kevin, Ruby’s husband, will share their story in depth on camera. It will also feature exclusive access to their friends and neighbors, and over a thousand hours of their YouTube channel’s unseen footage.

It is the latest true-crime docuseries for Hulu, which has previously aired The Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini, God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty and Stolen Youth: The Cult at Sarah Lawrence.
