Hugh Grant offered us all a rare glimpse into what he is like as a father in a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
For context, the 64-year-old star has five children, but he rarely discusses his family life in interviews.
Hugh shares 13-year-old Tabitha and 11-year-old Felix with actor Tinglan Hong, and 12-year-old John, 8-year-old Lulu, and 6-year-old Blue with his wife, Anna Eberstein.
Hugh previously revealed that he missed the birth of his first child due to his difficult relationship with the British media. In a statement issued to the Guardian after Tabitha’s birth, he explained: “I have had too many experiences of hospital staff being paid to leak information to the press.”
"Naturally, I was very keen to see my daughter as soon as possible, even if it could only be for a short time, so in the end, I took a risk and visited the day after the birth,” he added.
Hugh later admitted to the same publication: "I like my daughter very much. Fantastic. Has she changed my life? I'm not sure. Not yet. Not massively, no. But I'm absolutely thrilled to have had her, I really am. And I feel a better person."
Since then, Hugh has only shared occasional insight into his life as a father.
Speaking to Radio Times in 2020, the star said of his parenting style: “Stylistically, I'm probably more like my mother than my father. As children, she was quite silly with us, with lots of silly voices. I do that with my children, but I'm not sure they enjoy it. They roll their eyes half the time."
"Anyone with young children would probably agree that it's simultaneously the worst time in your life and the best," he said elsewhere in the interview. "On a day-to-day basis, as you tread on another broken toy with a hangover, it's just awful. But when you look back at the photographs on your iPhone, you realize: 'Oh, I have been extremely happy. This is very nice.'"
He also acknowledged how much he adored his kids in an interview with People, saying: “It's just lovely to have all that love around. Suddenly, you love someone more than yourself; it's unheard of in my case, and they love you, and it's all enchanting."
And just last month, Hugh revealed how his two youngest children’s unique names came about during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
He said: “I have a daughter who I named… I was in a bit of a panic with my wife on the day we named her. We thought it might be nice for her when she was older if she could say in bars that her middle name was Danger. So her name is Lulu Danger Grant."
Discussing his youngest daughter, Blue, Hugh shared: “Again, I panicked about names with my wife, so we asked [Lulu's] elder brother when she was on the way.”
“We said: ‘There's a new baby coming along. What should we call her?’ and he said: ‘Kevin,’ because that was his favorite Minion,” he revealed, referring to the movie Despicable Me.
“And we did think about calling her Kevin, but then we said, ‘You better think of something else.’ So he said Blue because it was his favorite color,” Hugh concluded.
But Hugh’s inner softie was arguably at its most exposed on Kelly Clarkson’s chat show, when she asked him about his “favorite part of fatherhood.”
Asking for the “range” of his children’s ages, Hugh tried to appear nonchalant as he replied: “Oh, I don’t know, they go from… I have a 13-year-old daughter right down to a 6-year-old daughter, and I have some sons sprinkled in there somewhere.”
“Are you the jungle gym dad?” Kelly then asked, explaining that this is when the kids “crawl all over you.”
“I love a bit of that,” Hugh immediately replied with his eyes lighting up. “I love a bit of that. I mean, there’s a lot to dread because I’m old and it’s noisy and it’s unbearable. I do a lot of hiding in the loo, I do a lot of sleeping in there now. There’s a lock, but they’ve pretty much broken it now.”
But Hugh then reigned in the jokes and earnestly added: “But it is nice.”
“I mean, I’m going home tonight and, you know, let’s face it, the bit where they jump in your arms…” he went on, noticeably softening. “The six-year-old, she calls it her chimpanzee hug. I quite like that.”
Catching his emotion, Hugh then joked: “I’ve made myself cry!”
And fans admitted that they were touched to see Hugh momentarily drop his grumpy old man persona to gush about his children, with one person commenting on a TikTok video of the clip: “This is the nicest and most warm I've ever seen him be on TV.”
“Hugh emotional about his kids at the end is very rare to see, I love it,” somebody else added. One more wrote: “I love how he thawed out after the ‘jungle gym dad’ question 🥰🥰🥰”
Another agreed: “His smile when she explained his kids crawling all over him was so genuine.”
