The At-Home Pizza Trick Fans Are Calling ‘The Perfect Meal’
Food mashups are where creativity meets the plate, and I absolutely love them. There’s something so exciting about unexpected flavor combinations—sweet meets savory, crunchy meets creamy—it's a whole new experience with some familiar foods.
Some of the best food mashups have come from daring experiments that break the rules. They bring a playful energy to eating—because who says a donut can’t be a burger bun or that bacon can't be covered in chocolate for a salty-sweet dessert?
Food mashups make eating an adventure and chef and lifestyle and fitness coach Calvin Kang (@cooklikeimbook) just shared one that I'd never heard of, but it's a popular regional food that people love! I have to give this one a try!

What is a Pizza Pot Pie?
To make this one-pound Pizza Pot Pie, Kang was inspired by the pot pie from Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinders Co.
You can get the full recipe in the caption of his Instagram post, but you'll need flour, Greek yogurt and baking powder for the crust. For toppings, you'll need sliced mozzarella cheese, turkey pepperoni, lean ground beef, green peppers, onion and pizza sauce. Kang's goal was to make these pizza pot pies a bit lighter and healthier than the original, so you can adjust the recipe to fit your specific needs.
And yes, a pizza pot pie is exactly what it sounds like! This is the love child of a pizza and a pot pie, and it’s absolutely amazing, according to the people who have had the pleasure of eating one. Instead of building your pizza on the rolled out pizza dough, you layer the fillings in a dish, drape the crust over the top and bake. Once the crust is brown and golden, you invert the pot pie onto a plate and you have a pot pie pizza!
This is such a fun concept because you can make them as large or as small as you'd like and everyone can customize their own. And the genius part of having the crust on top is that you don't have to worry about a soggy bottom.

How to Make a Pizza Pot Pie at Home
To make one of these, you line a bowl or deep dish with cheese, then add your pizza toppings, like pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms or peppers. Add a ladleful of pizza or marinara sauce on top of those ingredients.
Then, a thick layer of pizza dough is stretched over the top, sealing everything inside like a pot pie. You can follow Kang's recipe for a healthier option, and he even lists some tips on making it even healthier, if you can believe that! Don't want to make a crust? Just pick up some premade pizza dough at your local grocery store.
The pizza pot pie is baked until golden brown, and once it's done, you flip it upside down onto a plate, revealing the melty, gooey, cheesy filling as the dough becomes the base. You can then add fresh toppings, like black olives or spinach, more pizza sauce or more cheese, which is never a bad idea.
This dish became famous thanks to Chicago's Pizza & Oven Grinder Co., as mentioned above, but there are ways to make it truly your own. We love that it's a fun way to mix up pizza night. It’s like a deep-dish pizza but more dramatic—and who doesn't love a little drama with dinner (at least the good kind of drama)?
