Hollywood legend James Earl Jones, Star Wars and The Lion King actor, dies aged 93

Legendary actor James Earl Jones has died aged 93. The actor passed away at his home in Dutchess County, New York.

Jones' representatives at Independent Artist Group confirmed the news to Deadline.

The Hollywood icon was perhaps most famous for his voice role as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise and Mufasa in The Lion King, as well as his appearances in films such as Coming to America, Conan the Barbarian, Field of Dreams and The Hunt for Red October. He also appeared on The Simpsons three times.

Jones is one of the few entertainers to have won an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). His Oscar was an honorary one, awarded in the 2012 ceremony, though the star was nominated in 1971 for his role in The Great White Hope.

The actor amassed nearly 200 screen credits during his 60-year career, with some of his earliest roles in Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 classic Dr. Strangelove.

Tributes flow for James Earl Jones

Fans have taken to X to share tributes for the actor, with one user writing, "Rest in peace, James Earl Jones. One of the most powerful, evocative, emotional voices in cinema history."

They added the famous scene where Mufasa speaks to Simba from the stars in The Lion King, adding, "This is the first scene that came to mind, it’s one of my favourites of all time."

"'No, I AM YOUR FATHER,' James Earl Jones gave us the most iconic line in cinema history. Rest in peace to the greatest to ever do it," one Star Wars fan added.

Goodbye to the brilliant James Earl Jones. He gave one of the finest poetic speeches in cinema history," a third said, sharing a scene from Field of Dreams. "I still feel the same way about baseball all these years later."

"James Earl Jones one of the best Voice Actors and Actors we will ever see. Voicing Darth Vader and Mufasa??? Retire them characters for life. No one can do it justice," someone else added.

"One of the most, if not the most, iconic voices to ever exist in the film industry. RIP James Earl Jones," another said.

Actor Colman Domingo shared a tribute, which read: "Thank you dear James Earl Jones for everything. A master of our craft. We stand on your shoulders. Rest now. You gave us your best."
