Heather Locklear Recalls Tom Cruise Doing His “Risky Business” Dance Moves on Their Date
Locklear recalled the actor being "very nice" on their date, which wasn't a match for the actress during her "rock and roll" era
Heather Locklear is recalling her one and only date with Tom Cruise.
During a panel at 90s Con Florida on Saturday, Sept. 14, the Melrose Place alum opened up about meeting Cruise, 62, at an audition early on in their careers.
“We both did an audition for the film together — the two of us —and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm terrible,’” before joking, "'He's even worse!’”
“So at that time he was just like this little baby boy that I feel like I was a little bit older, and he ended up coming over to my house with Sean Penn,” she continued. “And they were just nice, but he was very, ‘yes ma'am’ to me, and I was like, ‘okay, sir.’”

A self-proclaimed “rock and roll girl” at the time, the actress said her style didn’t match Cruise’s.
“He didn't quite cut it,” Locklear shared with a laugh before explaining that they eventually went on a date. She recalled, “We went out dancing to Club Lingerie at that time and, and I've said this before, I mean, he was really cute.”
She then described his dance moves, revealing she was one of the first to see what ended up being his famous scene from Risky Business during which he slides down on his knees.
“He actually did that before [the movie], and I was dancing along like, ‘Do you stop dancing if they're down there?’” she recalled. “I was like ‘Yay!’ But he was very nice to me.”
She added, referring to the audition where they met: “Neither of us got that part by the way.”
Locklear has come a long way since then. In 1992, she got a role in Melrose Place, which went on to become an iconic series spanning over seven seasons.
In April, it was first announced that a Melrose Place reboot was in the works over 30 years after the original. They later confirmed it at 90s Con.
"The pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective," read a summary of the series.
Melrose Place was first created by Darren Star as a spinoff to the beloved Beverly Hills, 90210. The show followed the lives of a group of people living in an apartment courtyard complex in West Hollywood, California.
Locklear first appeared in season 1 in a guest role of Amanda Woodward, the ruthless and merciless boss of Thorne-Smith's character. By season 2, she was regularly appearing, although she remained billed as a "special guest star" for the remainder of the show's run.
