Hans Zimmer reveals why he turned down scoring a Marvel film: 'I'm looking for other things'

The composer says he's "done Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman! I mean, what do you want me to do, some of the minor characters?"

Legendary composer Hans Zimmer is explaining why he decided to press skip on scoring any Marvel film soundtracks.

During a recent visit to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz expressed his surprise that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had never reached out to the five-time Grammy award-winning composer about creating the soundtrack to one of their films.

“They have, and it was always… timing wasn’t great,” Zimmer replied. “And really, quite honestly, I’m looking for other things right now. Look, I’ve done the trifecta — I’ve done Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman! I mean, what do you want me to do, some of the minor characters?”

He continued, “That was very arrogant of me to say that, but actually, Kevin Feige said that to me: ‘Hans, what are you complaining about?’”

Zimmer has dabbled in the superhero space throughout his legendary career, penning the soundtracks for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Zack Snyder’s Superman films Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984

The closest he’s ever gotten to scoring a Marvel film, however, is through Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Fox’s 2019 X-Men film, Dark Phoenix

If it makes Feige feel any better, Marvel isn’t the only franchise that Zimmer isn’t interested in exploring — he also confirmed on the podcast that he'd pass up the opportunity to write for the Star Wars universe too, citing fellow composer John Williams’ already established and “masterful” work.

"I think the Star Wars thing, I think Ludwig [Göransson] is doing some very interesting things,” Zimmer said, referring to the composer behind Disney+ hits such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka

“How many interesting things do you want to put onto this thing before it falls apart and isn’t Star Wars anymore?” He added. “Because the only way I would see myself is if I could reinvent it.”
