Disney+ is digging into some nostalgic IP for a new series.

The streamer has ordered a pilot episode for a gender-swapped Holes TV series, Entertainment Weekly can confirm. The potential series will be based on Louis Sachar's 1998 young adult novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a 2003 feature film by Walt Disney Pictures and led by a young Shia LaBeouf.

Per the logline, the reimagining will follow a teenage girl who is sent to a detention camp, where a ruthless warden forces campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose. Liz Phang (Yellowjackets, The Haunting of Hill House) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Alina Mankin (Katy Keene, Lodge 49) will serve as writer and executive producer. Drew Goddard, Sarah Esberg, Andrea Massaro, and Mike Medavoy will also executive produce.

Both the National Book Award-winning novel and 2003 coming-of-age feature centered on Stanley Yelnats, a teenage boy sent to Camp Green Lake, a barren correctional boot camp in Texas, after he's falsely accused of theft. Alongside other "delinquents," Stanley digs holes day in and day out. It features interconnecting stories with characters linked to Stanley's past and the desert wasteland he finds himself in, including his great-great-grandfather and the supposed curse he inflicted on future generations.

From director Andrew Davis, the film was a box office success and featured a sprawling ensemble cast that included Patricia Arquette, Jon Voight, Sigourney Weaver, Eartha Kitt, and Tim Blake Nelson.

The Holes pilot joins a treasure chest of other reboots and spin-offs over at Disney+, including Wizards of Waverly Place spin-off Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, the animated Night at the Museum reboot, and the newly-announced four-episode revival of Malcolm in the Middle.

Variety was the first to report on the pilot order.
