Gavin Creel, Tony Award-Winning Broadway Staple, Dead at 48
Gavin Creel, a staple of modern musical theater whose career included a Tony Award win for Hello, Dolly!, has passed away. He was 48.
Creel’s partner, Alex Temple Ward, confirmed his death to the New York Times on Monday via a publicist. Creel had been diagnosed with a rare type of soft tissue sarcoma, known as metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, in July.

During his accomplished career on the stage, Creel won the 2017 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his work as clerk Cornelius Hackl in the Hello, Dolly! revival starring Bette Midler. He also earned two Tony nods for Best Actor in a Musical, first for Thoroughly Modern Millie (where he originated the role of Jimmy Smith on Broadway), then for 2009’s Hair revival (where he starred as Claude Hooper Bukowski).
Other notable theater roles included Jean-Michel in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles, Bert in the West End production of Mary Poppins, Elder Price in West End’s The Book of Mormon (a turn that earned him an Olivier Award), Dr. Jim Pomatter in Waitress and The Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince in Broadway’s 2022 Into the Woods revival, to name a few.
Creel also had credits on the small screen, including two Season 1 episodes of Hulu’s American Horror Stories, Disney Channel’s animated series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure (where he provided the voice of Matthews), and the TV movies Eloise at Christmastime and Eloise at the Plaza.
