There’s no doubt about it: Buddy the Elf is one of the most beloved Christmas movie characters of all time. A major part of his charm is just how goofy he is, and how his good-spirited, childlike demeanor catches non-elf adults by surprise. Well, get this: Many of the New Yorkers Buddy encountered in the movie genuinely were surprised by his festive flair. The reason? They weren’t actors.

“I was walking around trying to figure out how to shoot these streets,” cinematographer Greg Gardiner revealed. “How do we get the energy of New York City? How do you do that and not have it come out fake? The best way not to have it fake is to have it real and we just put him [Will Ferrell] out there on the streets. Those are real people; those aren’t actors. The guy in the red jogging suit, that guy was just there.”

Greg, of course, is referencing the bearded man Buddy mistook for Santa.

Ahead of the holidays, The Hook shared this tidbit with its one million followers and, suffice to say, Elf fans and Christmas lovers couldn’t contain their joy over the news. “Wow!! I love this even more now,” one person commented on Instagram. “I love this so much,” another fan chimed in. “Best movie ever,” someone else remarked.

While many fans praised just how genuine the filming was, others couldn’t help but wonder how many of the scenes were unscripted. “So does this mean he just ran out in front of taxis, unplanned as well,” someone else wondered. “Was the gum real,” someone else questioned.

Elf isn’t the only holiday movie to feature unscripted scenes. The Holiday, Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Love Actually, and Home Alone do, too.
