A city has planned its first-ever New Year's Eve seafront fireworks display.

Southend-on-Sea City Council said the free event would see two displays launched from a barge east of Southend Pier on the evening of 31 December.

The first will take place at 18:00 for young children to enjoy with a second taking place after the traditional midnight countdown.

Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism, and business, said the event would make Southend a "premier destination for residents and visitors alike".

"The fireworks displays promise to be a great experience, and I encourage everyone to come along and help us ring in the New Year in spectacular fashion," he added.
