Steven Khalil Talks Fashion Week Inspiration

Steven Khalil is a man in demand: the iconic designer hit the world stage last month after creating Nicole Trunfio’s wedding gown – and now he’s gearing up for his second show at Mercedes-Benz Australian Fashion Week on May 17 in Sydney.

Last year Khalil made his Australian Fashion Week debut, presenting a collection imbued with incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail. His show was heralded by fashion insiders as one of the highlights of the week.

On the day of our shoot in his Paddington studio, Khalil is throwing ideas back and forth with his team, working simultaneously across several projects at once. He wants to change the pearls on one dress, and he wants to add embellishment to another.

The words ‘artistic genius’ come to mind when hearing his creative, multi-tasking thought process. It’s not hard to see why he’s one of the most coveted bridal designers in the country.

Despite his success though, Khalil remains humble when talking about his journey to the top.

“Within Australia this is my second fashion week,” he tells Lynette Bolton during our shoot. "So I’m really excited. It’s definitely not something that happens overnight though. I’ve been prepping for at least half a year.

“Australian fashion is so incredible, and fashion week sets you on the world stage. The adrenaline is incredible. I love the lead-up with all the fittings.”

This season, Khalil says we can expect “a bit of fantasy” from the new collection, but in his signature style, everything will also be wearable.

“There are pops of lovely colour and blacks and golds as well,” he adds.

So what's next for the unstoppable designer? Possibly world domination. Khalil has a never-say-never attitude about international fashion week.

“International fashion weeks are definitely on the cards,” he says. “I never say never. Whatever comes – it’s definitely there.”

In the meantime, we can’t wait to see his second Australian Fashion Week outing later this month.
