Fallout critics angered over detail in hit new series: 'Woke garbage'

The new Amazon Prime series is already dividing the internet despite having only just premiered.

Fans of the insanely popular Fallout video game have been eagerly waiting for the TV series version to drop on Prime Video - which it now has. For the uninitiated, the concept explores an alternate history of the world in which, following World War 2, advancements in nuclear weapons led to a war and the survivors taking shelter in underground bunkers (known as vaults). The TV series follows the story of one such vault dweller - Lucy - who leaves her vault to be confronted by the desolate wasteland once known as Los Angeles.

While fans of the IP have expressed their excitement at the adaptation, there were a fair number of people who took issue with one major detail. Even though in the video game you can choose the race and gender of your main player, many found the fact that the hero protagonist is a woman to be deeply upsetting for some reason.

"OMG the sheer WOKENESS HAS ME TRIGGERED!!!!" one person commented on an Instagram post promoting the show.

"Hopefully this doesn't turn into Wokeout," another said, surely patting themselves on the back for being so clever.

"Probably going to be woke garbage and this bulls**t better not be cannon or they've killed the franchise," someone else raged.

"If this is woke I’mma be pissed," another offered.

Someone else pleaded, "I hope it's not full of wokeness. Please."

"Looks very woke," chimed in yet another person. "Skipping it."

"Estimation 1% of people who played the game were female, but yeah let’s make the lead female makes sense," wrote someone else.

Never fear though, as there was one person who didn't see a problem with the lead being female - but his acceptance came with a caveat.

"As long as the female lead shows some cleavage we're good," he accommodatingly said.

Among all of the naysayers, there were also fans of the video game who jumped in to defend the choice to have the lead be female, pointing out that true devotees of the game would understand.

"People complaining about if it will be political have literally never played a Fallout game," retorted one person.

"Everyone’s so upset about the protagonist being female even though you totally have the option of playing as a female in every fallout game Jesus Christ," another said.

“'Please don’t be woke' … have you played Fallout before?" another fan wrote. "I do not think some of you understand that the elements of it that you like are satirical commentary."

"Gotta love the triggered manbabies in the comments," another person teased. "Cry on kiddos!"

Aside from the people who were triggered by the casting choice, a few other fans expressed concern that perhaps the TV version would not be gritty enough based on the poster.

"People shouldn’t be upset that a woman is the lead role, but tbh it does look like they have turned this into a much softer world compared to what it actually is in the games," offered one fan. "Just my observation so far."

"Looks a little more vibrant than I would [have chosen]," said another. "Fallout vibes have always been a bit more muted dull and gritty."

"Cosplay vibes, where's the dirty and gritty feel?" someone else complained.
